A little about Shawnee
Mission Christian School
Shawnee Mission
Christian School is a Ministry of Olivet Baptist Church. Our school
accommodates children grades K-12. We also have introduced Wee-Care which
includes our infant and toddler unit, caring for children 6 weeks to 2 ½. In
addition, we have 2 ½ to 4 year old care which includes our preschool program.
In Kindergarten through 6th
grade we use the A Beka curriculum for instruction
We strive to make learning enjoyable by enhancing our
academic studies throughout the school year, including field trips and
special days at school.
For our Junior and Senor High School we use
curriculums from various publishers, including ABeka, Bob Jones
University press, Alpha and Omega LifePacs and Switched-On-Schoolhouse
computer based curriculum. In addition to the core subjects SMCS offers
electives in the areas of vocal music, drama, foreign language (Spanish
and German), yearbook, computer and several courses using the LifePac
self-study curriculum. The school is also involved in interscholastic
sports with a girls' volleyball team and boy’s soccer team in the fall
and girls' and boys' basketball teams in the winter months. Students
from SMCS participate in the MAACS Fine Arts Competition in the spring
of the year.
Since our school is a ministry of Olivet Baptist Church, our Bible
classes reflect our beliefs as well as our standards. Our dress code is
based on a sense of uniformity and modesty. Our young men wear nice
pants and collared shirts and our young women wear dresses of knee
length.
Associated with our school is the Discovery Program, a learning therapy
program developed by the National Institute of Learning Disabilities (NILD).
Arrangements can be made with Pastor Howard Bourdess, an NILD therapist,
if you have questions or desire to have your student tested in this
area.
