COVID - 19  Protocol

Safety is of the upmost concern to the teachers, staff, and administration of SMCS. As such, the following guidelines have been developed relative to protecting students, families, and patrons of SMCS from the spread of COVID-19.

In addition, those participating in or attending SMCS sanctioned events should adhere to any state, regional or local policies that are put in place. Shawnee Mission Christian School will make every effort to follow the CDC guidelines related to CCOVID-19.  We realize that it will be difficult to address every possible scenario that will arise as a result of COVID-19.

GENERAL HEALTH STANDARD:
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, which is predominantly contracted through the droplets of an infected person. These droplets are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, speaks, etc.  The guidelines are intended to mitigate the risk of exposure to these droplets during the school day. Mitigation techniques work. Masking, physical distancing, hand washing and staying home when ill are effective. If properly adopted by students and staff, the risk of contracting COVID-19 can be reduced.

No student, parent, teacher or staff member should attend school or any school event if they are experiencing any symptoms of COVID-19. For someone who has experienced a fever, contact with others should not resume until the fever has returned to normal WITHOUT fever-reducing medications for at least 24 hours and symptoms have improved.

INFORMATION SHARING:
It is important to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 to others. As such, we will share general information related to possible or confirmed COVID-19 cases that arise.  The office will inform immediate family members that have had “close contact” with the potential or confirmed COVID-19 cases.

SMCS will use the following guidance:

"Close contact”, per CDC guidelines, is any individual who was within 6 feet of an infected person          for at least 15 minutes starting from 2 days before illness onset (or, for asymptomatic patients, 2               days prior to positive specimen collection) until the time the patient is isolated. - This shall apply to any individual (students, teachers, staff members etc.)

GENERAL MASKING PROTOCOL FOR SMCS
  • Masks will need to be worn into and out of the building.
  • Students will be allowed to remove their masks in classrooms where social distancing is being practiced.
  • When students are congregated and social distancing cannot be achieved, masks will be required.
  • Masks are not required while at recess.  However going to and from the play area, masks will need to be worn.

GENERAL PRINCIPLES FOR ENTERING AND EXITING THE BUILDING
  • ALL students will enter the same door, the school entrance.
  •  If students arrive prior to 7:45, they will be assigned a specific space in the auditorium.
  • JH/SH students will need to move quickly to their home rooms.  No loitering at the lockers.  Due to the fact that the 7-10 grades are in the same area for lockers, the students MUST have their masks on and over their mouth and nose.  Once they are in their seats, they can remove their mask.

Drop off and Pick up

  •  As students are being dropped off in the morning (at the school entrance), parents will need to form a drop off line.  This will (hopefully) look as follows:
  •  Circle around the center lines and stop by the school entrance.  Students will exit the car and temperature will be taken.  Depending on those results (100.3 or below) the parent will either pull away or park. The student’s temperature will be re-taken after 10 minutes, using an inner ear thermometer.  Depending upon those results the student will either be allowed to enter school or be sent home.

  • Pick up will take place at the east side church entrance (this is where normal pick up for the elementary is located).
  • Classes will go to their assigned rows in the auditorium.
  • One teacher at the door will radio (walkie talkie) to other teacher (s) stationed in the auditorium, and that family will exit to the parking lot.  This will continue until all students are picked up.
  • Exception– athletes (they will need to go where their coaches have instructed them to go).

Please be prompt in picking up your child(ren) no later than 3:30.

GENERAL HAND HYGIENE GUIDELINES
  • Elementary students will have hourly hand washing breaks.  They will also be using hand sanitizer between breaks.
  • JH/SH students will be required to wash hands every hour and a half.  They will be using hand sanitizer between classes.

GENERAL CLEANING GUIDELINES
  • Students will be assigned to a specific desk and required to use that desk only.
  • In cases, JH/SH, where students will be using multiple rooms for classes, the desks will be sanitized between classes.
  • All cafeteria spaces will be sanitized between lunch periods.
  • ALL common areas will be cleaned and sanitized daily.
  • Classrooms will be sanitized at the end of each school day in preparation for the next day.

GUIDELINES FOR THE CAFETERIA
  • Each class will be assigned a table and each individual student a seat. (Names will be on the seat).
  • Classes will need to seated immediately and then take turns using the microwaves, getting milk, and hot lunch line.
  • Students buying office lunch will need to line up outside the office door and invited in by the office staff.
  • Tables will be sanitized before and after each lunch period.
